Meanwhile, the Karnataka Police arrested an All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader, who’s also a cleric, in connection with the violence in Hubballi recently over an alleged social media post hurting the sentiments of a community. Police sources said that the cleric was identified as Waseem Pathan, who was nabbed in Mumbai on Wednesday night and brought to Hubballi on Thursday morning. In other news, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday clarified that he doesn’t have any soft corner for the regional party Janata Dal (Secular). Also, officials of the Karnataka police’s Criminal Investigation Department arrested the gunman of a Congress MLA and a police constable on Thursday in connection with the sub-inspector recruitment scam, taking the number of arrests in the case to 10.
Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in Bengaluru on Thursday that his party would form a government in Karnataka after next year’s Assembly elections and that it would be a “zero per cent commission government”.
A revolution in skills development is set to happen in Kalyana Karnataka region, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.
The Chief Minister in his address after launching the ‘Skill on Wheels” mobile skills development unit in Kalaburagi said, India has a young population with youth constituting 46% of its population,the highest in the world. The Skills Development department of the State is providing skills development in various vocations under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Skills Development Scheme. The department has launched a novel programme of providing skills at the door steps of the youth through the ‘Skill on Wheels,’ he said.
The mobile units would provide training in electrician and beautician courses. The project aims to take up large scale skills development programmes in villages to make the youth self employed, Bommai said.
In an ongoing PSI recruitment scam investigation, Karnataka CID on Friday arrested Afzalpur block Congress president Mahantesh D Patil.

The student whose alleged social media post led to violence in the old town of Hubballi on April 16 night, appeared for the second Pre-University exam on Friday with police protection. The examination started on Friday and will go on till May 18. The first paper was Business Studies.
Police took the student Abhishek Hiremath from the Hubballi sub-jail at Ashok Nagar to the college in a police vehicle. He had allegedly posted a video showing a saffron flag on a mosque, which is said to be the root cause behind the violence. A large number of Muslims went on the rampage damaging many police vehicles, a hospital and a Hanuman temple nearby. (PTI)

Earlier, six students from Udupi, who had approached the Karnataka High Court seeking permission to enter classrooms wearing hijab, had asked the education department that they be permitted to appear for the exam in hijab. But the state government had declined their request citing the high court ruling that had upheld the uniform rule. Read more
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said the government will implement the orders of the courts on regulating the use of loudspeakers in mosques and everyone should abide by the law. He said the police have already issued a circular to this effect and meetings will be held at the police station level.
“Regarding Azaan, there are Supreme Court and High Court orders, we have already issued circulars to this effect. There are laws about how much decibel (sound) should be there. DG (Director General of police) has already issued a circular,” Bommai said. (PTI)
As many as 6,84,255 students have registered for the PU examination across Karnataka, which started on Friday. A total of 621 students will be appearing for the Logic examination today, while 2,35,498 will give the Business Studies examination.
In its order, the Education Department said neither teachers nor students will be permitted to wear a hijab or any attire displaying their religious identity in the examination hall.
Two students were denied permission to take their PUC exams Thursday, on the grounds that they were wearing Hijabs in Karnataka’s Udupi district. The students were asked to leave the college premises.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has a budget outlay of 10,480 crore for the year 2022-23. The civic body aims to collect Rs 3,680.15 crore – 56 per cent of the revenue – in taxes and cesses. In its budget analysis, the non-profit organisation Janaagraha said the budget variance for the last fiscal is at 5 per cent, which indicates good budget practices and tighter implementation. Officials of the Karnataka police’s Criminal Investigation Department arrested the gunman of a Congress MLA and a police constable on Thursday in connection with the sub-inspector recruitment scam, taking the number of arrests in the case to 10. Hayyali Desai, gunman of Afzalpur MLA MY Patil, was arrested while accompanying the latter near the Ram Mandir in Kalaburgi, said a police officer. The other arrested accused is Rudragouda Patil.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday clarified that he doesn’t have any soft corner for the regional party Janata Dal (Secular). “We do not have any soft corner for JDS. They are doing their politics and we are doing ours,” Bommai said. Speaking to media persons in Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district, he rejected the view that HD Kumaraswamy has a soft corner for BJP.
Karnataka Health and Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Thursday announced implementation of biometric attendance system at all hospitals and offices under the state health department. There are 3,230 such institutions with over 65,000 people as staff.
“The state health department has taken a big step to increase accountability of its staff by implementing a biometric attendance system. Under the new system, the salaries of officers, doctors and staff will be based on the attendance. This will bring a qualitative change in the department by ushering more discipline, accountability and efficiency,” the minister said. Read more

Before he was nabbed, Pathan released a video in which he stated that he did not incite violence but in fact arrived in the area to defuse the situation. He claimed he did not make provocative statements. Read more

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would form a government in Karnataka like it did in Delhi and Punjab, Chief Minister of the nation’s capital Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday.
“We, the common people, were challenged to get into politics when we demanded law against corruption. We formed a political party. Our first government was formed in Delhi and then in Punjab. Now, we will form our next government in Karnataka,” the AAP chief told said while addressing a farmers’ rally, organised by various farmers’ body, led by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS).
KRRS convenor Kodihalli Chandrashekar joined the AAP and called upon the KRRS members to extend full support to the party. Read more
Bengaluru-based advanced battery technology startup Log9 Materials Thursday unveiled an indigenously-developed cell manufacturing facility at its campus in Jakkuru, aimed at meeting India’s future electric mobility goals.
With the newly-launched facility, the startup is aiming to achieve at least 50MWh of peak cell production capacity in the next one year, and then they would be scaling to over 5GWh in the next 3-5 years.

Professor G Bala from the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru said: “Every year, the southern peninsula, including Karnataka, receives pre-monsoon showers in March, April and May. What we are witnessing now is these pre-monsoon showers. There is a large year-to-year variation in the quantum of these pre-monsoon showers. Scorching heat is also usual during this period but it has become intense in recent years likely because of global warming and urbanisation.” Read more
A 27-year-old man from Shiggaon in Karnataka’s Haveri district was injured Tuesday night after a minor argument at a movie theatre during the screening of Kannada movie ‘KGF 2’ escalated into a fight that ended with the man being shot twice in his stomach.
According to police, Vasanthkumar (27), a resident of Mugali village, was watching ‘KGF 2’ at Rajashri theatre along with his friends. Twenty minutes into the film, Vasanthkumar accidentally touched the seat of another moviegoer. This sparked an argument and the accused stormed out of the theatre with his friend, the police said, only to return with a pistol and open fire at Vasanthkumar. Read more

A report by the NGOs ActionAid Association and Slum Mahila Sanghatane titled ‘Without food, without jobs and without education’ highlights the post-pandemic challenges faced in accessing education amid a struggle to survive. The report was released on April 19. The report also states that there is a drastic increase in the number of children who have turned to child labour for survival, who have been trafficked and married off.
